Shawn & Kaelen

CCI breeder Kaelen is spending the weekend with us. He's been fun to
have around! Such a sweet boy, he loves playing fetch and hanging out.
Kaelen was bred to Akeelah for her 1st litter, the "T's" that just went
out to puppy raisers.

A day at the park

Shawn had a lot of fun playing at the park today! I went rollerblading
and the dogs ran along with me, Shawn made it 2 laps around the park
before getting tired. Shawn's favorite activity is playing on the slide
at the park, she thinks it's the best! The dogs also had fun running in
the sand and practicing their commands!

Shawn and friends

Shawn and her friends had a great day walking around the park and to the
river. It was a nice day out and getting the dogs out of the house while
it's not raining is always nice.

Vote for Milano!

Check out Milano's photo on Snobby Dogs her picture is titled "A Miracle in the Making". I'm not sure what the prize is, but it's great exposure for CCI :)

New CCI Hearing Dog video

"Canine Companions for Independence Hearing Dogs are specially bred Labrador and Golden Retrievers who alert partners to key sounds by making physical contact such as nudging the leg or arm. Among the many sounds Hearing Dogs are trained to recognize and respond to are the sound of a doorbell, alarm clock, someone calling a name or a smoke alarm. After being placed in the home, the graduates “customize” the dog’s alerting pattern to their own particular environment and needs. Examples include: alerting to incoming e-mail messages at work, timers on microwaves, dryers and other appliances, and dropping keys." For more information check out www.cci.org

Shawn's fun filled day

Today started out with a trip to the park with Shawn's friend Taylor, a
very energetic Jack Russell. They played (well Taylor chased a ball
while Shawn sniffed things at the park and then decided to play a few
chase games). Shawn loved rolling around in the grass and getting all
the "good" smells on her..little did she know she would be getting a
bath when we got home! I thought it would be more fun for her to go
swimming and get her bath than to just have a bath, so if was off to the
pool for Shawn. She hasn't been swimming in months, but it's a little
warmer here today and not raining so I thought she would like it. I was
right, she was so excited to get to go swimming and she's clean :)

CCI puppy classes on the tennis court

Today we had puppy class on the tennis court. It was a lot of fun and the court makes for a great, safe place to work on off leash work. At 9am we started with Riffraff, then Basic and finally KPT. Last night there was the Big Dog class for dogs that are going back to CCI in February. They had a lot of distractions and did very well.

It was SO funny, Carly told us to line the dogs up. Since it was Milano's time for class I was working her and letting Shawn just hang out on the court and distract the puppies. When we lined up the dogs, without me knowing, Shawn went over and got into position in line all by herself! It was so great!!! She's so smart :)

Great Day

We had a great Christmas Eve with family in Tahoe. The sunset was
amazing!! Lisa, Teal, Tom and I built a snowman and we named him Fred :)
Shawn played in the snow while we built it, she love burying her head
and rolling around and then running in big circles! Now we're having
family game night, playing the Wii, Shawn is sleeping in the room (or
trying to) and every time we say "Mookie" (one of the Wii players names)
Shawn will wake up, we couldn't figure out why and then realized that it
sounds just like "cookie" one of her favorite words :)

Christmas Eve

Shawn is relaxing by the fire and loving it! Oh the life of a retired
breeder.

Chandra & Magic

Chandra has spent the day with her buddy Magic. Next week Magic will be
flying to Portugal to be with his family there. It's going to be really
sad to see him go! My family has been watching Magic since he was 4
months old, he's 7 now. Magic and Hiltie my 2nd puppy grew up together
and since then Magic has been friends with Chandra, McKenna, Omeeka and
Milano. There's a lot of videos and pictures of Magic growing up on this
page. It's going to be really sad to see him go!

Lemonade for CCI

Article from newsday.com

For four years, Kyle Orent and his fundraising lemonade stand have been a familiar sight around his hometown of Northport. He's the cute kid philanthropist who managed to squeeze tens of thousands of dollars in charitable donations from thirsty folks who needed an ice-cold drink.

Beginning at age 7, Kyle took his stand to local sports games and the annual Cow Harbor Race. He didn't charge for the drinks, but encouraged donations. He raised $20,000 the first year, his mother, Kathy, said. After four years of mashing lemons and auction sales, he's collected $115,000, all for Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that trains dogs to help people with disabilities.

But Kyle's 11 now and a sixth-grader at Northport Middle School, and the lemonade stand has begun to cramp his legs, not to mention his almost-teenager style.

"I'm getting older," he said Thursday night, before accepting a "Local Heroes" award from Bank of America, in a ceremony at the Long Island Children's Museum in Garden City.

The award, which includes $5,000 donated to the recipient's favorite charity, honors community leaders who contribute significantly to the health of their neighborhood. The bank also donated nearly $450,000 in unrestricted funding to local nonprofit organizations.

Kyle is the youngest recipient in the six years the award has been given, said a bank spokeswoman. He says he wants to be a fundraiser when he grows up. His hero is real estate magnate and TV star Donald Trump.

Why Trump? "He always has a Plan B," Kyle said. "After I sold lemonade, auctions were my Plan B."

Kyle sold his own toys in an online auction, according to his Web site, kyleslemonade.org. He also writes to celebrities such as baseball great Hank Aaron, asking them to autograph dog collars. He auctions the collars on eBay's "Giving" charity site.

Almost a third of the money Kyle raised came from the lemonade stand, and the rest from auctions and matching donations from individuals and corporations.

And he hasn't totally given up on exchanging big glasses of lemonade for big bucks. His mother, Kathy, said Kyle's hoping to recruit younger kids to carry on the lemonade tradition.
